Two Men Convicted in Connection With Lakewood Woman's Death

Neighbors stole more than $80,000 from elderly woman on Edgewater Driv; she died from complications from discontinuing her anti-seizure medication in 2008.

A jury convicted two Lakewood men who stole more than $80,000 from an Edgewater Drive woman during a five-year period.

The woman died in May 2008 from complications from the withdrawal of her anti-seizure medication. 

Michael Debartolo, 51, was found guilty Friday of involuntary manslaughter, failing to provide for a functionally impaired person and theft.

Steven Kerr, 78, was found guilty of theft.

Both men lived next door to the victim, in the 19000 block of Edgewater Drive when . According to a press release from the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office, Debartolo presented himself as the victim’s caregiver but failed to provide care from November 2007 to May 2008.

Her death was ruled a homicide due to medical neglect.

Additionally, both defendants stole money from the victim between 2003 and May 2008, totaling approximately $80,000.

Both men are set to be sentenced Sept. 28 by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Lance Mason.
