When it comes to health care, the dominating force in this country is the medical system. Our TV commercials, websites, radio stations, and magazines are inundated with ads for drugs, drugs, and more drugs. Every commercial is punctuated with the phrase “discuss your need for this drug with your doctor”. We are always being told to go to the doctor when the slightest thing out of the ordinary happens to our bodies. Even if we don’t go that far to see a doctor, most people reach for the medicine cabinet and pop whatever over-the-counter medication they may have to alleviate their ills. And we are consistently told that what we are taking is “safe and effective”. What people are not being told is that medical care is the third leading cause of death in the US today, trailing behind heart disease and cancer.
