Woman Claims She Slit Husband's Throat in Dream About Filleting Fish

An Ohio woman claimed in court this week that her husband was a hapless victim of a weird juxtaposition between real life and REM sleep, and the only reason she slit his throat was that he got in the way of her dream about filleting fish.

Sound like a whopper or, ahem, a fishy-smelling excuse that got away?

A judge didn’t take the bait and ordered Judy Jones, 44, to stand trial on attempted murder and aggravated assault charges, the NBC affiliate, WTOV of Steubenville reports. Jones is in jail on $500,000 bond.

Authorities allege Jones of the Dillonvale, OH, had been threatening to kill Thomas Jones, 49, for at least a year, and likely would have been successful early on the morning of Saturday, July 26, if the couple’s 16-year-old daughter hadn’t made a frantic 911 call.

Jefferson County Prosecutor Jane Hanlin told the television station that Jones’ fish story – which she has since retracted – was bizarre.

“I can’t even imagine,” Hanlin said. “You hear something strange every day on the news. Certainly this is one of the stranger stories that we’ve heard, and I think maybe that’s why she backed away from it a little bit after that.”

Judy Jones has a history of disorderly conduct and prior domestic violence convictions related to aggression against her husband. “So, there is a history of violence between these two parties, and I think that’s a good indication of what happened on this night,” Hanlin said.

Thomas Jones is recovering from his injuries, but has “stitches from almost ear to ear,” Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla told the television station.

The fish tale is circulating virally on message boards, blogs and sites that aggregate weird crime stories.

On one, a blogger for BarstoolSports.com wrly noted that it’s a lucky thing for the victim that his wife wasn’t dreaming of chopping cucumbers.
