Marietta College President Dr. Bill Ruud announced that he will be leaving his position "to pursue other opportunities" either on or before Jun. 30. Ruud joined the college as its 19th president in the summer of 2016 and was previously the president of the University of Northern Iowa and the president of Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania before his time in Marietta. Marietta College officials said they would be announcing their plans for an interim president before Ruud's final day. (WTAP)
Several Marietta Police Department officers were recognized for their excellent work in responding to a situation involving a suicidal individual with a gun. Detective Tewanger was awarded a valor pin for his role in saving the individual's life and protecting the lives of the other officers involved in the incident. Detective Young, Patrolman Hanson, Patrolman Allender, and Parking Enforcement Officer Emerick all received letters of commendation for their roles. (Marietta Ohio via Facebook)
The Marietta City Schools Board of Education heard several presentations and updates from the school district teachers and staff during the board's regular Tuesday meeting. Fire and EMS Academy teacher Gwynette Mayer talked about the benefits that her class gives to students, while Chinese Language teacher Andrew Shu provided details about an upcoming trip to Japan that he says would be a good way to teach a new culture to students. Facilities manager Darrell Prim informed the board that the floors at Washington Elementary School are showing bubbling after being affected by water from two burst frozen pipes over Christmas break.
