Here are the top stories today in Marietta:

  1. Marietta schools have a chance to apply for a piece of the $11 million in safety grants being handed out by Attorney General Dave Yost's office for the 2022-23 school year. The grants are for $2,500 total or $5.50 per student, whichever is the greater amount. Yost's office said the money, which comes from House Bill 110, can be used by public or charter schools, educational service centers, STEM schools, and those operated by county boards of developmental disabilities in Ohio. (The Marietta Times)
  2. The Glenville State College track and field team opened the season at Marietta College on Friday evening. The men's squad finished second and the women's team finished third. The meet was a major success for the Pioneers with 20 top-5 finishes between the men's and women's teams. (The Weston Democrat)
  3. World War II Veteran Walter E. McHugh of Marietta passed away at the age of 99. He graduated from Marietta High School, class of 1941, and served in the Army 8th Air Force from 1942 until 1945. McHugh worked for the local B.F. Goodrich plant from 1946 to 1984, retiring as Sgt. of Security. He was a charter and life member of VFW Post #5108 and lifetime member of the American Legion, Post #64. (WTAP)
