Baby it's Cold Outside

Oh the weather outside is frightful, But the fire is so delightful, And since we've no place to go, Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

I have to admit, I hate winter. Since I was a young child, I never liked the cold and still dread any weather under 60 degrees. I am one of those people that relish the 90 degree summer heat and barely break a sweat.

Most children love to go outside and play in the snow, I cried. My mother would try to bribe me with hot chocolate, giving me a carrot to use for my snowman's nose. Sorry, it just did not work... Mom would bundle me up, give me a scarf, gloves, help me into my boots, but it was all in vain. I barely made it outside for 10 minutes when I would run into the house, pull off all my winter gear and stand by the heat register. My desire to make a snow angel or build a snowman was basically nonexistent, so when the other children played in the snow I really was never even curious what I was missing. I just wanted the hot chocolate with extra marshmallows and whip cream (and a cookie if offered).

Now, keep in mind, my mother became ill when I was 7 years old and she was always cold because of her poor circulation, so she kept the heat in our house at 92. You may ask, how do I remember she kept it at 92? I know for sure because that was the highest our heat would go in the house. My playroom was in the attic, and as we all know, heat rises. My sisters and I had to keep our shorts and bathing suits out during the winter, because if we wore winter clothes in the attic, we would suffocate. Often times people ask me if I grew up in a warm climate and even though I always lived right here in Cleveland, I have to admit, relatively speaking I grew up in a house with the average temperature of 92. I guess that is a warm climate – one I wish I could afford every time I see my Dominion Gas bill – LOL.

When I had my children they knew right away, if they wanted to play in the snow, they were on their own. Their father would take them sledding and I always dropped them off as often as they wanted to go ice skating (never my cup of tea, if I want to ice skate I can try and navigate high heel boots in the winter). Keep in mind, I was the only mother who sat at the swimming pool "watching" my children until they were 25 (OK, I am exaggerating a bit, but you get the point).

When Perry Como goes on and on about his white Christmas, I wonder if he is from Florida, or at least has a place there for the winter months. ... Enjoy your holiday season and I hope that the only snow I have to see is inside of a snow globe. Wishful Thinking!
