The Pride of Mayfield Marching Band Director Jim Sanford cajoled and drilled his young troops into shape for the football team’s season opener at Nordonia on Friday.

Sanford could see the students’ attention flagging from time to time and implored them with some zippy one-liners.

“We’re supposed to make people feel peppy, not want to go to a funeral home,” Sanford said.

Ouch!

Well, despite being a little weary with a few pitch problems here and there, the band eventually delivered right on the mark and sounded ready for Friday’s festivities. The game begins at 7 p.m.
