Teenager In Critical Condition After Accident In Mayfield Heights

The young girl was struck by a car while riding her bicycle on Lander Road. She is currently hospitalized in critical, but stable condition.

MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, OH — The 14-year-old girl hit by a car on Monday is in stable but critical condition, Mayfield Heights Police Chief Fred Bittner said. She remains in the hospital at this time. Bittner also noted that no charges will be filed against the driver because police found he was not at fault in the accident.

Bittner said the girl was riding her bicycle on Lander Road at Maplewood. The girl likely did not see the car coming and rode right in front of the approaching vehicle, leading to the accident. Lander Road was briefly closed on Monday because of the collision.

In a Facebook post, the department urged everyone to be more careful on the roads. The department also responded to comments criticizing the lack of patrols on side streets.

"With summer here, it’s important to talk to your children about traffic safety and potential dangers. No parent wants to receive a phone call that their child has been injured," the department said on Facebook. "For motorists, please keep an eye out for our kids and slow down."

When a resident complained that side streets in Mayfield Heights are frequently treated as "drag strips" the department responded by saying, "Our patrol officers regularly enforce traffic on the city's side streets. They also get tied up with domestic disputes, shoplifters, and dozens of other reports and calls each day."
