Weed Bust Spurs Murder Rumors In Mayfield Heights

Officers busted a group of juveniles smoking weed last week. Residents watching the bust became convinced there had been a murder.

MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, OH — Police were forced to take to social media late last week to dispel rumors of a murder in the city. The brouhaha started over an incident at the Drake Apartments on July 18 that saw several juveniles get busted for smoking marijuana.

Officers were called to the apartment complex at about 4 p.m. on that Tuesday. Police say the juveniles had disconnected a smoke detector and were smoking weed in the stairwell of one of the buildings. When officers approached, the juveniles fled.

Police managed to catch a few of the juveniles, and one of them had a handgun in his possession. The gun was later found to be inoperable.

Since some of the other juveniles had managed to escape, the officers on-scene called for back-up. Additional Mayfield Heights Police cars then checked the area. All five of the juveniles were caught and will face charges.

The rumor mill began churning however, and soon the word on the street was that there had been a murder near the Drake Apartments and a body had been found by the dumpster. None of which was true. In a post on Facebook, the Mayfield Heights Police said, "We have no idea how that rumor started but it is not true."

As a result of the actual arrests, several people will face eviction from the Drake Apartments.

A spokesperson for the Mayfield Heights Police Department did not immediately return Patch's request for an update.

Police also reminded residents of the town's police motto: "See it! Hear it! Report it! If we don't know about it, we cannot do anything about it."
