Deer Hunting Success, Turkey in the Spring and ODNR Hearing.

Deer hunting results are in for 2011, the 2012 Turkey season outlook and the ODNR asking for public advice.

The ODNR is reporting that 219,698 deer were taken in Ohio in the 2011-2012 season.

This is down 9% from the previous deer season.  The mild winter aided in more nocturnal movement for deer which is their preferable time for activity.  When the winter gets cold it forces deer to move during the day to survive, leading to more hunting success.

The mild winter has a residual side effect for turkey hunters.  Regular flocks that normally this time of year would yield 20-30 turkey are now being seen with 40-60 turkey indicating more birds are surviving the winter.  This should lead to a good spring season.

The ODNR is having a public hearing on March 8th at 9am in Columbus to gather suggestions for the upcoming season as well as vote on season dates and bag limits for 2012-2013.
