Journey Toward a Healthier Lifestyle

I work at least 50 hours a week at a sedentary job and have been sustained by nothing but string cheese, reduced-fat Pringles and Yoplait yogurt... Something has to give!

The purpose of this blog is to document my various attempts at leading a healthy lifestyle.

What is healthy? To me, it used to mean being as skinny as possible with minimal effort. It was more about how I looked than how I felt. It certainly had very little to do with how I treated my body.

Now that I’m in my 30s, it just isn’t that simple. My metabolism and energy levels are dropping. I work at least 50 hours a week at a sedentary job and have been sustained by nothing but string cheese, reduced-fat Pringles and Yoplait yogurt for breakfast and lunch.

Then, when I finally get home, I consume whatever I can get my hands on. Last night, for instance, I ate a large doughnut and an even larger serving of Hamburger Helper, followed by popcorn and some pudding.

Remarkably, I still am within the normal BMI range for my height and weight but I feel… terrible. I’m hoping that writing this blog will force me to be a little more accountable in the diet and exercise realm. Because if I don’t exercise or try to eat healthier, I’ll have nothing to write about!

I’ll also discuss my one success to date – quitting smoking. I smoked cigarettes for exactly 10 years on and off. I attempted to quit many, many times and tried a variety of different smoking cessation aids before finally giving up the habit for good in October of 2009.

Maybe something I cover on here can help you, the reader, finally stop smoking. It definitely wasn’t an easy feat for me and I needed all the help I could get!

So here’s to my first blog post and here’s to a healthier life for you and me. Oh, and here’s to me finally working off that last 15 pounds that I’ve been wanting to get rid of.  Game on!
