I recently discovered My Song Boutique located in the DiVine District in Willoughby. The boutique carries commercial items, custom clothing, and consignment pieces.
I am always inspired by people who have found success in the handmade world. That success led to this store which is now branching out into the consignment business.
I interviewed the creative force behind the shop, Jackie Bertolette, and share it below.

How long have you been sewing? designing?
I started sewing when I was a young teen and have been designing clothing for myself since then. I began designing and sewing for others 15 years ago and launched my line, R.J. Luna, in 2008.
Who taught you?
My Aunt passed on her love of sewing to me at an early age. She taught me how to sew simple clothing and basic techniques and I taught myself the more intricate techniques through trial and error and instructional books.
What did you study in school?
I have been in an art field much of my life. My degree is in Commercial Photography. I spent 15 years photographing fashion, live performances and shooting models' portfolios. However, I never strayed from my first love, sewing. Along the way, I designed stage wardrobe for rock bands and theater performances.
Tell me about the DiVine District.
The DiVine District is an emerging area of downtown Willoughby that is attracting new consumers and businesses. The monicker is a name we conceived of as we opened My Song Boutique on Vine Street, just off Erie. The idea was born to assist in prompting folks to turn the corner and discover more businesses that Willoughby has to offer.
Do you enjoy other hobbies?
Of course, I love fashion and shopping! But most of all, I enjoy doing anything that allows me to be creative. Sharing my love of art with my kids and spending time creating it is my favorite way to pass time. We do an array of things together from drawing to re-purposing found objects. Often we will make home made gifts for special occasions.
Are you from the Willoughby area?
I am originally from Eastlake and except for a few short term jaunts for college and to "experience the world", I have lived in the area all of my life.
Any advice on balancing work and family life?
This balance is the hardest thing for any working mom. Everyday is a new challenge, but I try make it a bit easier by including my children in the operations and designing when possible. They learn about professionalism, integrity and managing the store, time & deadlines, all of which translate to life skills. It is also very important to reserve time in my day for them and them alone. No work, business or phone calls. This time is theirs and I focus on their needs.
Favorite vacation spot.
My favorite vacation is shopping in New York City, however it is not a place for a family event. Therefore when my family is together, I enjoy taking them to any destination that puts a twinkle of curiosity in their eyes and a smile on their faces. It may be the zoo, science center, or even just a day at the park discovering nature.
Fondest childhood memory.
There are so many!!! If I had to pick one, I would say it is Fourth of July any year in my childhood. My birthday is the 5th and going to see the fireworks was one of the few outings that usually included my Dad. He worked long hours providing for us and missed much of our family time. As the fireworks exploded, he and my Mom would pull me aside and tell me that the entire country was celebrating my birthday! Still puts a smile on my face, even today.
Who would you like to be for a day?
I have people that inspire me and motivate me both personally and professionally, but I enjoy being who I am and the living my life. I wouldn't want to be anyone else.
Favorite candy.
I am a chocolate fanatic!!! My Faves are Lindor Truffles, Godiva anything, Mallo Cups, Reeses Cups & Raisinettes.
What helps you when you are in a bad mood?
I have four strategies for staying upbeat when I'm feeling down.
1) I strongly believe in "The Secret" and focus on the things I want, persevere and know that I am receiving!
2) I love music and will sometimes loose myself in a favorite or inspirational song.
3) I will give back to others, helping me reevaluate and know many aren't as lucky as I am.
4) I keep pictures of my children and family close at hand. I will take a moment to reflect, reminisce, be thankful for our blessings and visualize our goals. I find strength in them and the grey skies clear.
Use one word that best describes yourself.
Driven. Because we only get one shot at it, I am dedicated to making this life the most I can for both me and my family. Whether it's personal or professional, I focus on giving it my all, being present to the fullest, enjoying the experience and never having regrets.
