The Next Chapter Experience: A Morning for Women Asking, "What's Next?"

Headlands Beach State Park 600 Headlands Rd., Painesville Twp., OH

&nbsp;&nbsp; After birds cross Lake Erie on their southern migration from Canada, some stop to rest at Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve. Blackbrook Audubon will sponsor a Big Sit in the picnic area at the entrance to the preserve. With coffee and doughnuts, everyone will gather to scan the nearby shrubs and trees for warblers and other fall migrants as they recharge before continuing their journeys. This outing is ideal for less mobile people who enjoy group birding.
&nbsp;&nbsp; Blackbrook "perches" at this same location each May for spring migration and is offering this Big Sit during the Headlands Birding Festival, a celebration of fall bird migration. Participants should bring binoculars and a chair or blanket any time between 8:00 am and noon. Headlands Dunes shares a common entrance with Headlands Beach State Park at the northern terminus of State Rt. 44, or Heisley Road. After entering the park, stay to the right to find parking lot P-1. Public restrooms are nearby as is the entrance to the handicapped-accessible boardwalk leading to the beach. Email blackbrookaud@aol.com for more information.

Blackbrook Audubon joins Headlands Birding Festival

&nbsp;&nbsp; Blackbrook got a running start and took off from Granger Pond at Veterans Park in Mentor in August. They will set down at 8:00 am on the Chagrin River at The Rookery in Geauga County September 27. Birders of all skill levels are invited to join this walk on the fourth Sunday of each month, south of Fowler's Mill Golf Course.
&nbsp;&nbsp; The Rookery's proximity to the Chagrin River makes it part of the Chagrin River Corridor Important Bird Area, a designation by the National Audubon Society. High-quality wetlands and a beech-maple forest provide habitats for 179 bird species <a href="https://ebird.org/hotspot/L1550970" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">listed on eBird</a>. Bird species often seen here include Green Heron, Belted Kingfisher, several woodpeckers, Swamp Sparrow, Rusty Blackbird and warblers.
&nbsp;&nbsp; As the group birds the 1.5-mile, gravel Interurban Trail, they’ll follow the same route taken by the Cleveland &amp; Eastern Traction Company's electric-powered trains, which ran from 1899-1925. The Rookery is the site of the C&amp;E Junction between lines serving Cleveland to Chardon and a branch south to Burton and Middlefield. The restroom does not have running water.
