&nbsp;&nbsp; Two members of Blackbrook Audubon will present Social Songbird: The Purple Martin in a free program at the Perry Public Library. <a href="https://perrypubliclibrary.libcal.com/event/16613729" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Registration</a> is required.

&nbsp;&nbsp; <a href="https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Purple_Martin" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Purple Martins</a> are the largest member of the swallow family. After spending winters in the Amazon, they return to North America to breed in the summer. Martins in the eastern U.S. are entirely dependent on humans to provide suitable shelter for breeding success. Tonight's speakers, Alison Huey and Ann Bugeda, monitor Purple Martin colonies at Chagrin River Park, Osborne Park, Mentor Lagoons, Walsh Park and Lake Erie Bluffs. These birds also nest at Holden Arboretum and Penitentiary Glen in Kirtland. Trained volunteers band nestlings and some adults at these colonies so that data gained can help scientists understand Purple Martin migration, lifespan, reproductive success and their population status. Learn about the local colony successes, the current threats to these aerial insectivores and what you can do to help Purple Martins. Banding is done under federal permits from the US Geological Survey and data is submitted to the <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/labs/bird-banding-laboratory" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Bird Banding Laboratory</a>.Photo: Purple Martin nestlings

Blackbrook Audubon presents Social Songbird: The Purple Martin

Veterans Park 5730 Hopkins Road., Men

&nbsp;&nbsp; Birders of all skill levels are invited to Blackbrook Audubon's monthly bird walk at <a href="https://www.lakemetroparks.com/parks-trails/veterans-park/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Veterans Park</a>. Trails are level with asphalt, compacted gravel and boardwalk. The walk leaders will have a couple pairs of binoculars to lend. Blackbrook will host this bird survey on the fourth Sunday of each month until August.
&nbsp;&nbsp; May's bird list grew to 58 species, 13 of them were warblers. The walk started with a Scarlet Tanager and some Cedar Waxwings in the parking lot. A Cooper's Hawk and Common Grackle sat on their nests. Gray Catbirds, Baltimore Orioles and Eastern Warbling Vireos were abundant.
&nbsp;&nbsp; At 100 acres, Veterans Park encompasses the largest inland pond in Lake County, Granger Pond, and protects a remnant of original Ohio swamp forest. The property was once a sand quarry. The City of Mentor purchased it from the Granger family in 1970 and formed Mentor’s first neighborhood park. It's now managed by Lake Metroparks, which stocks the pond with catfish, bass, bluegill and rainbow trout. A valid Ohio fishing license is required to fish at Veterans Park.
&nbsp;&nbsp; Granger Pond's wide expanse attracts both fishermen and birds such as kingfishers, herons and mergansers. The <a href="https://ebird.org/hotspot/L620840/bird-list" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">list on eBird.org</a> shows 211 species for this location. Just under a mile from Lake Erie, the pond and tree cover at Veterans Park offer birds inland shelter from blustery lake conditions.
