These twirlers took top honors at the Twirling Unlimited International Championship in Canton

Whiz Kid's Accomplishment: The five-member majorettes team won the award for the best short program by a senior high school team at the Twirling Unlimited International Championship July 10 in Canton.

The Mentor High Majorettes, who are coached by Kelly Hoellein, competed for the first time at TU International Championship this year and won first place.

Of course, these girls are no rookies.

Alycia Freeman, Alison Reilly, Amy Arslanian, Ashley Burkin and Kristen Shirey had plenty of time to practice their moves while entertaining crowds during the halftime show of Mentor High football and basketball games.

Alison graduated this June and will continue to twirl at Kent State University. Meanwhile, two new twirlers are ready to fill her shoes.

Because, next year at TU, they will be veterans and defending champions.
