American Psychiatric Hospitals were built with noble intentions. They were designed to help and house people with physical handicaps and/or mental illnesses who could not be treated at home.
Many beautifully styled buildings, gardens and farms were created for the patients, and the hospitals often had their own community. However, over the years, problems arose with overcrowding and many patients became neglected, abandoned or even abused.
