Watch: Bus Full of School Kids Make 88-Year-Old Grandma Cry

You won't believe why.

By Leeann Teagno

MENTOR, OH — For the past five years, 88-year old Doris Vehar has woken up early to fulfill a task that fills her heart with joy. Every morning, she walks to the apron of her driveway on Melshore Drive to wave and blow kisses to a bus full of elementary-aged children as they make their way to school. In the afternoon, she repeats the ritual as the children head home for the day.

Her neighbor, Kathy Shrewsbury-Latino, said most of the kids in the neighborhood know Doris by a special nickname: “Grandma.”

“She hasn’t missed a day in over five years,” said Shrewsbury-Latino.

On February 24, she recorded a very special moment between Vehar and the students on the bus.

“I told the bus driver, Stacy, that it was her 88th birthday, so she had the children sing to her,” she said.

Shrewsbury-Latino, who works for the Mentor Public Schools, said that the children make Doris so happy that she is often brought to tears as she waves to the children from her driveway.

“She never misses a holiday, either,” she said. “She takes treat bags to the school for the kids and hands them out as they board the bus. She literally runs home so she doesn’t miss when they drive by.”

Shrewsbury-Latino went on to say that Vehar’s’ kitchen is filled with pictures given to her by the children, who clearly have the same affinity for her that she does for them.

“She will stand outside in the pouring rain or in a blizzard to see those kids,” she said. “It gets me every time!”
