📰 News we're reading

1. Students and staff advocate for environment in arena project plans (miamistudent.net) — Miami University's new $281 million arena on Cook Field is moving forward, and Oxford-based students, staff, and groups like CROW are pushing hard to protect nearby natural areas and wildlife. From stormwater runoff into Four Mile Creek to bird-safe glass and dimmed lights during migration, planners and advocates are negotiating how this project can grow while still preserving Oxford's green spaces.

2. Talawanda board hears financial forecast, discusses student debt penalties (oxfreepress.com) — Talawanda school leaders serving Oxford families are warning of tight finances ahead, as new state tax laws could cost the district millions even with temporary relief payments. At the same time, the superintendent plans penalties such as restricting dances, parking passes and possibly graduation for students whose families don't pay or arrange plans for school fees, sparking debate among board members.

3. Miami professors to receive settlement in Anthropic lawsuit (oxfreepress.com) — Miami University professors in Oxford are among authors receiving payments from a $1.5 billion settlement with AI company Anthropic over allegedly copied books, and they're wrestling with what AI means for teaching and scholarship. As Miami rapidly expands AI courses, tools and infrastructure, several local faculty members and Oxford Free Press board members voice concerns about copyright, student learning, and how fast the technology is reshaping campus life.

4. Video: Injured bald eagle released back into the wild after Tri-State rescue (local12.com) — An injured bald eagle found near US 127 and Oxford Middletown Road in Milford Township has recovered and been released back into the wild. Butler County deputies first rescued the bird, then local raptor specialists treated its injured leg before returning it to the same rural area to fly free again.
