Man Arrested in Off-Campus Shooting Released from Butler County Jail, Awaiting Grand Jury

Patrick J. Belinson, the 27-year-old Cleveland man arrested on charges tied to the shooting of two Miami University students in October, has been released from the Butler County jail as the case proceeds to a grand jury for possible indictment.

Belinson was charged in the Oct. 4 shooting at 210 S. Campus Ave. that left two Miami University students injured. He faces two counts of complicity to aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, and two counts of complicity to felonious assault, a second-degree felony.

Belinson was arrested Oct. 14 on the charges. He was released four days later after a bail bond agent with HB Bail Bonds posted the $200,000 bail. Grand jurors review all felony cases for possible indictment, which is routine.

The victims, Jared Goldhamer, 20, and Volodymyr Kovalenko, 23, received non-life threatening gunshot wounds to the legs. They were released from area hospitals shortly after and are in classes.

Oxford Police said the shooting was tied to the sale of over $4,000 worth of marijuana.

Oxford police are continuing the investigation and anticipate arresting the gunman.

"We are hopeful and confident that there will be enough evidence to file charges against the guy who pulled the trigger," said Oxford Police Chief, John Jones.

Jones said he hopes that arrest will occur by the time students return for classes this spring.

It remained unclear if the students will face criminal charges or Miami University sanctions in the case.
