'Lock Your Cars, Prevent Thefts': Berea Police

The Berea Police Department is asking residents to lock their cars if they're parked outside overnight.

BEREA, OH - The Berea Police Department is asking residents to lock their cars at night. A rash of thefts from unlocked cars have plagued suburbs across Northeast Ohio.

The department said that locked doors and empty seats can keep "curious" people and those wishing to snatch items away from your car. Most of the cars being pilfered from are victims of opportunity. An unlocked car with valuables in the backseat makes an easy target for criminals.

"Most of these people are looking for a “quick grab” taking anything that is lying out or inside a glove box," the department said on Facebook. "Please help us by keeping your vehicles locked and valuables out of your cars at night."

In February, Shaker Heights Police dealt with a slew of thefts from unlocked cars, homes, and garages. Residents were asked not only to lock their vehicles and homes at night, but to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity.

Additionally, Shaker Heights Police said spare keys and emergency keys should be kept in a secure location that is known only to you (so maybe not that fake rock you bought a few years ago).
