1. Sight for All United hosts annual event Events (farmanddairy.com) — A major charity gala is coming to the Eastwood Event Centre in Niles on October 24, with registration and sponsorships open until October 3. Sight for All United's Eye Ball of the Mahoning Valley will feature raffles, auctions, live music, and dancing while raising money to improve access to vision care. Local residents can reserve tickets and sponsorships online now.
2. Niles, YSU receive grants (tribtoday.com) — Niles is receiving a $402,500 federal grant to build new electrical infrastructure and boost power capacity for seven local businesses, aiming to attract about $20 million in private investment. Paired with a larger grant to Youngstown State University, the funding targets coal-related job losses and could support new manufacturing, workforce training, and long-term economic growth in Trumbull and Mahoning counties.
3. Housing summit addresses shortage in the Valley (wkbn.com) — A regional housing summit held Wednesday at Eastwood Mall in Niles brought builders, developers, and local officials together to tackle the Mahoning Valley's housing shortage. Attendees saw a live 3D-printed concrete demo and heard calls for local governments to embrace new tools and programs to expand affordable housing options and stabilize the real estate market.
4. Judith M. Graff, Poland, Ohio (wkbn.com) — Family and friends in Niles and Poland are mourning Judith M. Graff, a longtime area nurse and devoted parishioner, who passed away Tuesday at 69. Services will be held this Saturday in Poland, with calling hours Friday evening, giving local loved ones time to pay their respects and support her children, including a daughter who lives in Niles.
5. YSU Theatre stages mystery-comedy (tribtoday.com) — A Youngstown State University production of the mystery-comedy "Ravenscroft" opens Friday, featuring a cast that includes a performer from Niles. The show runs through Oct. 11 at Bliss Hall's Spotlight Theater, offering local theater fans an intricate, humorous whodunit while honoring late Ohio playwright Don Nigro's long career and popular Inspector Ruffing series.
