Stark Community Foundation’s Board of Directors granted $1,146,083 in discretionary grants during the second and third quarter toward community programs and services serving Stark County.
Of the approved grants, $50,050 has been awarded to Northeast Ohio Medical University for the ongoing research project for Parkinson’s disease. The funds come from the Irene H. Smith Memorial Fund in Stark Community Foundation, created in part to find a cure for Parkinson’s disease.
Also receiving funding is MAPS Air Museum. MAPS have been awarded a grant of $30,000 to provide field trips to MAPS to Stark County school districts, for their social studies and history class students. The MAPS Air Museum acquires, restores, preserves, and exhibits the impact of aviation.
The following are discretionary grants that were approved by the Stark Community Foundation Board of Directors:
Akron Zoological Park: $25,000 for the Mike & Mary Stark Grizzly Ridge Exhibit
Alliance Neighborhood Center: $20,000 for the New Beginnings program, focusing on educational and recreational purposes
Alliance Pregnancy Center, Inc.: $10,000 toward the start-up of health programs
Alliance YMCA: $25,000 as additional support for the Capital Campaign
American Red Cross of Stark County: $30,000 for the Stark County Disaster Relief Services program
Boy Scouts of America: $150,000 for Renovation and Expansion of the Seven Ranges Scout Reservation
Boys and Girls Club of Massillon: $50,000 to implement the “Impact Initiative” strategic plan
Canton Calvary Mission: $15,000 for the after school program
Canton Palace Theatre Association : $100,000 (over two years) for ceiling repair
Canton Symphony Orchestra: $2,500 for board and staff capacity building
Canton Tomorrow: $15,000 for beautification projects
Deuber United Methodist Church: $10,000 for Dueber Kids Club after school program
Domestic Violence Project, Inc.: $11,960 for Mental Health Accredidation/Certification for the Renew program
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Stark & Carroll Counties (HFH): $27,500 toward new home construction, in collaboration with the Timken Foundation
Heartbeats to the City: $15,000 for the after school program at Allen Elementary School
Junior Achievement of East Central Ohio, Inc.: $50,000 for the Junior Achievement Means Success program
Lighthouse Ministries of Canton, Inc.: $15,000 for the after school program
MAPS Air Museum: $30,000 for field trips to MAPS for Stark County U.S. History Class students
Minerva Community Meals Association: $15,000 for the hot meals program for the elderly
Multi-Development Services of Stark County: $5,000 for the Career Club Summer Employment project
NEOMED: $50,050 for the Parkinson’s Disease Research project
New Philadelphia City Schools, Quaker Foundation, Inc.: $4,963 for the Archive Preservation project
North Canton Heritage Society: $25,000 to create a handicap accessible entrance at the new location
Northwest Stark Senior Citizens Commission: $21,360 for the Northwest Stark Senior Center renovation
OSU Agricultural Extension Office : $15,000 for on-going support
Pathway, Caring for Children: $11,750 for computer server upgrades
Players Guild of Canton, Inc.: $10,000 for the TADA! Teacher Arts & Drama after school program
Project REBUILD, Inc.: $26,000 for program equipment and facility repair
Quail Hollow Volunteer Association: $10,000 for repair and replacement of roof
Refuge of Hope Ministries: $10,000 for the hot meals program
RePlay for Kids: $5,000 for expanding the RePlay at Home program to Stark County agencies
Siffrin, Inc.: $10,000 for the Professional Advancement through Training and Education in Human Services (PATHS) training program
Stark County Hunger Task Force: $20,000 for food pantries throughout Stark County
Stark Development Board, Inc.: $150,000 (over three years) for the Stark County Entrepreneurship Program
University of Mount Union: $150,000 (over three years) for construction and renovation of the Health and Medical facility and Fine Arts building
YMCA of Central Stark County: $5,000 for the Strong Kids financial assistance program
Grants have been paid regularly since 1965. Grants are awarded from the Foundation’s Community Charitable Fund to areas such as neighborhoods, afterschool child care, education, basic needs, economic development and capital campaigns. Donors also provide grant funding directly to organizations through Donor Advised Funds, Donor Designated Funds and Field of Interest Funds. Total grant distributions year-to-date in 2012 are more than $4.8 million.
