Panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on display at Stark State College in recognition of World AIDS Day Dec. 1. The free exhibit, located in the Business and Entrepreneurial Studies building at 6200 Frank Ave. N.W. in Jackson Township, will be open to the public daily from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. Nov. 26 – 29 and 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Nov. 30.
The internationally celebrated quilt began in San Francisco more than 20 years ago with a single 3 x 6 foot panel and today is a tapestry of more than 47,000 panels created by friends, lovers and family members in an attempt to transform loss and heartbreak into hope and healing. By revealing the humanity behind the statistics, the quilt is designed to help teach compassion; triumph over taboo, stigma and phobia; and inspire individuals to take direct responsibility for their own wellbeing and that of their family, friends and community.
The quilt, nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, is a 54-ton tapestry memorializing more than 92,000 individuals lost to AIDS. Arrangements to have the quilt at Stark State were made by the SSC Multicultural Affairs Office and the NAMES Project of Atlanta.
