On Saturday, September 29, 2012 the North Canton Police Department partnered with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board of Stark County, Ohio, and gave the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. The service was free and anonymous.
The police department collected from the public 152 pounds of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction.
Once again, this initiative addressed a vital public safety and public health issue. It provided an alternative and positive solution for the public to rid their homes of medicines that languish in home cabinets and on shelves where they are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. The program also provided a positive method for disposing of unused drugs and medicines--instead of flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash--both pose potential safety and health hazards.
