Census 2010: North Canton Grew Nearly 7 Percent in Past Decade

The number of black or African-American residents nearly doubled, while the white population rose 4.5 percent

North Canton gained 1,119 residents in the past decade, according to numbers released this week by the U.S. Census Bureau. That increase in population (6.8 percent) is something Stark County as a whole did not experience.

In fact, the county decreased population by .66 percent between 2000 and 2010.

In North Canton, the number of white residents increased 4.5 percent (from 15,862 to 16,585); the number of blacks or African-Americans rose 94 percent (going from 183 to 356); the number of American Indians or Alaska natives rose 154.5 percent (going from 11 to 28); and the Asian population increased 17.6 percent (from 170 to 200).

Ohio (the last column in the two tables below) saw an increase of 1.6 percent.

The Census, held every 10 years, is designed to guide the reconfiguration of the nation's legislative districts, and will determine which areas of the country and state will gain representation in the halls of Congress β€” and which will lose influence.
