The North Canton Public Library is gearing up for its annual summer reading programs. This summer, special programming will be offered for children and teens ranging in ages from birth through high school. The childrenβs summer reading program will kick-off May 31, 2013. This yearβs summer reading program theme, βDig Into Reading,β lends itself well to a variety of programming centered around animals, gardening, construction, dinosaurs and more. A special Reading Record, which allows children to track their reading throughout the summer, will be available at the childrenβs desk on the second floor of the library, beginning May 31. Children are eligible to earn prizes for the reading accomplishments they record. Additionally many specialized childrenβs programs will be offered from June through August. Our goal is to keep children engaged in reading and learning this summer even if they donβt realize that theyβre doing anything more than having fun. In keeping with the theme, library staff will be on-site at the June 8 and June 15 North Canton Farmerβs Markets. The library table will offer summer programming information for parents, and children can create a bookmark and make their own edible βdirtβ dessert cup. In 2012, 1,148 children participated in the summer reading program, a 16 percent increase from 2011. Registration for the Teen Summer Reading Program begins Monday, June 3 at the libraryβs reference desk.
