City Council to Seek State Auditor's Opinion on Disaster Relief Fund

Council President Jon Snyder asked that Councilman Mark Cerreta, who proposed the fund, send a letter to the Auditor's Office about the viability of the community-funded program

City Council moved forward with its discussion to to help those who've suffered property damage as a result of natural disasters ().

Council members again discussed the viability of having the disaster relief program, which would be funded by North Canton residents and businesses that wish to donate. introduced the plan Sept. 6.Β 

Members plan to ask the Ohio Auditor's Office about the feasibility of creating and maintaining the fund.

"It seems to be pretty simple and easy for the benefits we're going to get out of this thing down the road," Cerreta said.

Still, others are leery.

said the fund may create extra work for the city's finance department because of handling checks and other paperwork.Β He said money from the fund would be needed to pay the salary and benefits of those employees while they're working on the fund, as it takes away from their city duties.

Council President Jon Snyder asked that Cerreta send a letter to the State Auditor's Office before council decides on the plan.
