βEveryone says our chocolate custard is better than any other place they have had it and thatβs because we buy real ice cream custard that has 10 percent butter fat.β
One of the specialty sandwiches includes the "prairie dog" that is a hot dog topped with barbecue pork instead of coney sauce. Roβs also uses Heggyβs hot fudge for their sundaes. While everything is good, milkshakes are made the old-fashioned way and are the biggest seller with "concretes" (ice cream mixed with candies or cookie dough) coming in second.
βWe have been here for so many years that the city told me we have become a North Canton institution,β Denny Albert said.
Roβs is open from mid-March to October. Summer hours are 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m. and 1 p.m.-10 p.m. on Sundays. Spring and fall hours vary.
Milk & Honey
This ice cream and candy shop is another Stark County treasure that opened in 1962 and has been in the same location at 3400 Cleveland Ave., Canton, ever since. Dwayne Cornell now owns the company that was started by his parents and has left the format pretty much the same all these years, making eating at Milk & Honey an old-fashioned experience.
βI started working for my dad when I was 13 years old," Cornell said. "My first job here was to make chocolate, fudge and nuts."
Milk & Honey offers 23 flavors of hand-dipped ice cream along with floats, 78 different combinations of sundaes, hot waffle sundaes and a full grill menu with sandwiches and homemade soups.
Need more reason to go there? There's also a candy store, bins of fresh-roasted nuts and they offer ice cream cakes and pies. With all of those offerings, Cornell thinks they are best known for their banana splits with three super-sized scoops.
βWe make thousands of banana splits over a summer. The ice cream is all hand-dipped for the banana splits and they are really big,β Cornell said.
Milk & Honey is open year-round, seven days a week from 10 a.m.-11:30 p.m. There are two dining rooms. The front room looks like the old-time soda shops with a giant neon ice cream cone on the ceiling, a lunch counter with round metal stools and booths. The back dining room has a front end of a car sticking out of one wall and the other walls display old license plates.
