Walsh University Presents Dr. Brad Maguth "Save World History in Ohio" Phi Alpha Theta Luncheon
The Walsh Honor Society of History Alpha Nu Sigma will host the annual 2013 Ohio Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference at Walsh University, on Saturday, March 23, in the Barrette Business and Community Center.Β This yearβs conference theme will focus on the movement to βSave World History in Ohioβs Schoolsβ and will feature Dr. Brad Maguth, Assistant Professor of Social Studies Education from The University of Akron.Β The public is invited to attend the conference luncheon from 12 noon until 1:30 pm that will focus on the controversial decision by the Ohio State Legislature and the Ohio Department of Education to not include World History as a required course for high school graduation beginning in 2014.Β Tickets are $15 per person for the luncheon and registration is required online at http://walshphialphatheta.eventbrite.com/#.Β As a part of the conference, all local K-12 Social Studies teachers are invited to attend a teaching session from 1:45- 2:45 pm.Dr. Maguth was featured in the National Council for the Social Studiesβ The Social Studies Professional and on WKYC Ch. 3 News in leading the petition βto ensure that World History is an essential part of the social studies curriculum in schools, and a required course for high school graduation in the State of Ohio.β Β Β In support of the movement, Ohio Senator Frank LaRose announced on February 28 that he will introduce legislation to add a World History requirement for Ohio High School graduation. Click here for more information. Dr. Brad Maguth earned his BA, MA, and PhD in Social Studies Education. Dr. Maguth is a former high school social studies teacher that has experiences living, teaching, and researching in London, Beijing, and New York City. As a faculty member in the Department of Curricular and Instructional Studies at the University of Akron, Brad oversees the M.S. AYA Integrated Social Studies Program. Brad is responsible for teaching AYA social studies methods courses, and his research interests include investigating the ways in which the social studies mediates and complicates the development of informed and active democratic citizens in a global and multicultural age.
