Extend Your 4th with Stark Parks

Stark Parks is offering county residents a variety of programs to extend their 4th of July revelry through the weekend. After participating the the North Canton YMCA race and feasting on hot dogs, hamburgers, and steaks and enjoying fireworks on the 4th, Stark Parks encourages residents to come out for a patriotic music concert, hikes, canoeing and kayaking, or a children’s musical picnic. Reservations for the programs are currently underway at www.StarkParks.com or you may call 330-409-8096. Here’s what’s on the schedule:

Fri., July 5β€”Fit Friday Walk along the West Branch of the Nimishillen Creek. Meet at 9 a.m. at the Timken Gatehouse in Stadium Park in Canton for this 2.1-mile walk.

Fri., July 5β€”Patriotic Music Concert at 7:30 p.m. at the Exploration Gateway at Sippo Lake Park, 5712 12th St NW. Β The Canal Fulton-Clinton Community Band will perform a variety of band pieces and celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address. Bring a blanket or chair to sit on. This free concert will be held indoors in case of rain. (A playground beside the picnic shelter will give little ones a space to have fun while they listen!)

Sat., Β July 6β€”High Mileage Hike. Meet at 9 a.m. at Canton’s Martindale Park Β for a 6.25-mile hike along the Middle Branch Trail from Martindale Park to GlenOak High School and back! Be prepared for a strenuous hike by wearing comfortable hiking shoes, dressing for the weather, and bringing plenty of water. Martindale Park is at 4001 Martindale Road NE.

Sat., July 6β€”Scavenger Paddle from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at Deer Creek Reservoir north of Alliance. Stark Parks will provide all the equipment, or you may bring your own. Pre-registration is required by calling 330.409.8096 by July 5. Afterwards you can enjoy a picnic in a shaded Β woods or fishing off the accessible pier. Deer Creek is also the northern terminus of the 4.46-mile Mahoning Valley hiking and biking trail, including a beautiful bridge overlooking Deer Creek and Berlin Reservoirs.

Sat., July 6β€”Princess Picnic at Petros Lake Park at 12 Noon. Young guests will celebrate the classic story of the Princess and the Frog with games, crafts, and a concert of princess-themed songs. Guests are invited to dress in regal attire, dine on delicious treats, and make a toad house to take home. (Princes are also welcome to attend!) $10 per person includes lunch. Tickets can be purchased at www.SilverStarYouth.com
