
Free canoeing, kayaking, pontoon boat rides, fishing, demonstrations by Dock Dogs and Ohioβs Division of Wildlife--all of these outdoor activities will be part of the Stark County Park Districtβs annual βSummer Splashβ boating event at Walborn Reservoir on Sat., June 22. Stark Parks will sponsor the annual event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Located just minutes from downtown Alliance, Walborn encompasses more than 2,000 acres and features a marina at 11324 Price St. NE, a covered picnic shelter with electricity, a free boat ramp, 10 miles of hiking and horseback riding trails, boat rentals, fishing, and a variety of birds and waterfowl, including osprey and eagles. Registration will begin at 9:45 a.m. for morning Summer Splash activities and at 12:45 p.m. for afternoon activities. Activities requiring registration will include canoeing, kayaking, and pontoon boat rides. Stark Parks will provide all equipment and basic instruction for canoe paddlers and kayakers. Boating guidelines for the event are as follow: β’ Participants are encouraged to bring aquatic footwear. β’ Children under 8 years old must be accompanied by two adults when canoeing and tandem kayaking. β’ Minimum age for solo kayaking is 10 years old. β’ Canoeing, kayaking, and pontoon rides will be suspended if winds exceed 15 mph or in the event of thunder or lightning. Demonstrations by Dock Dogs-Team Zeus are scheduled for 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. An electro-shocking demonstration by the ODNR Division of Wildlife will take place about Noon. The Division of Watercraft will set up a safe boating display, including licensing requirements and safety gear. Fishing techniques and tips will be provided by the Berkley Fishing Team, a group of professional fishermen from three counties who sponsor numerous childrenβs fishing derbies throughout the county. Hikers, birders, and horseback riders may use the trails anytime. Hikes taken during the Summer Splash can be used toward the completion of Stark Parksβ βHike a Hundredβ challenge.
