Have You Seen This Man Caught on Video Stealing Tips?

Jojutlas Mexican Grill owner turns to social media for assistance in tracking down thief.

Jojutlas Mexican Grill owner Gary Hulett is using social media in an attempt to identify a man captured on surveillance footage stealing tips from a jar on the restaurant’s counter Thursday evening.

At about 9 p.m. Thursday – not long after the theft occurred – Hulett posted this on the Jojutlas Facebook page: “To the guy in the Colts jacket that just stole my staff’s tips tonight at 8:12 p.m. out of their tip jar, we have you on video and we are putting it on Facebook."

Hulett made good on that promise, posting the first of two videos within an hour along with the message, “Does anyone recognize this guy? He stole my staff’s tips tonight. I have a second video but it has not uploaded yet, coming soon.”

The first video shows a man entering the restaurant wearing black pants, black shoes, black hat and the black and blue Indianapolis Colts jacket. About an hour after that post, Hulett uploaded the second video which shows the same man leaning against a counter, looking around and stealing the tips.

"This is the guy taking my employees' tips," Hulett wrote on YouTube. "He even double dipped to get ALL of them while my staff was away for a second to restock their stations. Who knows this guy?"

Many of the restaurant’s Facebook fans reported that they had shared Hulett's videos on their personal pages in order to help spread the word and catch the thief – who was referred to in numerous posts by quite colorful names.

Some Facebook fans referenced tip thefts they said occurred at other area eateries, with one woman saying she believes the Jojutlas thief is the same man involved in one of the other incidents.

Another Jojutlas fan wrote, “This guy (from the Jojutlas theft) came into my office at 1204 north main st wearing (the) same outfit with a note that he ran out of gas and needed money, he acted like he was a mute and couldn't talk but we showed him the door. I watched him continue south on north main going into other businesses.”

Hulett’s most recent post about the incident, at about noon Friday, read, “Thanks to all of you who have shared the videos about the Tip Thief. Tell your friends to share them as well. We have not identified the man yet.”

Hulett could not be reached for comment Friday.
