Irish Teens Need You!

Irish Teens Need You! (an urgent call for host families)

For nearly three decades, violence between elements of
NorthernΒ Ireland's nationalist community (Roman Catholic) and its unionist
communityΒ (Protestant) has led to walls of intolerance and mistrust in
Northern Ireland.

Each year, the Massillon-Canton Ulster Project flies
twelve Β teenagers from the Belfast, Northern Ireland to Stark County.
Ulster ProjectsΒ teens (14-16 years of age) live with host families who are
of the same genderΒ and same side of the Catholic/Protestant "faith
line." During theΒ month of July, theentire group of Northern Irish
and American teens meetΒ almost daily for activities, including encounter
sessions, social activities,Β community service projects, and worship.

A little about the Ulster Project:

Β Northern Ireland is a beautiful land torn by sectarian

strife andΒ hatred. For centuries, Protestant and Catholic citizens of this

country haveΒ waged a blood feud against each other. The history of the

Northern IrelandΒ "troubles" fills entire libraries.

Most of Northern Ireland's people are tired of living in

fear ofΒ their neighbors and desire to live in peace. To that end, the

people ofΒ Northern Ireland have appealed to their friends and relatives in

the UnitedΒ States to help their children reach across this great divide

and learn toΒ accept each other for who they are. And we are answering

their call...

Each summer, Massillon Ulster Project brings twelveΒ youngsters

from the Greater Belfast area for a month-long stay in theΒ Massillon/Canton

community. OurΒ American teen-hosts share their homes andΒ hearts with

their new-found friends from across the sea. Together, they work,Β play,

and learn how to make a more peaceful world.Β

Our Project Committee, made up of local volunteers, has prepared aΒ full

schedule of social, spiritual, and service activities designed to build aΒ community

of young people dedicated to changing theΒ world.
