North Canton City Council President Resigns, Will Take Role With Ohio Department of Development

City Council President Daryl Revoldt will say goodbye to North Canton at the end of the month and head to Columbus for his second role with the Ohio Department of Development.

Revoldt will become the director of legislative affairs and outreach for the department. His resignation, which he tendered Wednesday, is effective March 28.

“This is a historic opportunity to change the way we approach economic development,” Revoldt said Tuesday night.

Revoldt was a city councilman from 1981 to 1998, mayor from 1998 to 2001, an employee with the Ohio Department of Development from 2001 to 2006 and back with city council as its president in 2007.

He said he looks forward to helping “create a climate for opportunities for people to find grateful, satisfying employment.” He’s talked to too many who have been affected by the weakened economy, mainly through layoffs.

“It’s tough to put a misery index on 600,000 lost jobs, but if we can help bring opportunities to those who have lost their jobs, even replace a large fraction of the jobs, that’s very gratifying.”

Revoldt said he’s enjoyed his time on council. Members have had to handle some of the most difficult issues North Canton has seen in some years, and they were well-equipped to see those problems through, he said.

“It has been the best group I’ve served with.”

Council now is tasked with filling Revoldt’s at-large seat, and Vice President Jon Snyder becomes president.

Whoever fills Revoldt’s seat must then run for re-election in November 2011.
