Patch Picks: The Best Summer Camps

It is never too early to plan summer activities for the kids. We've got five excellent options in the area to keep them busy

1. YMCA of Central Stark County's Camp Tippecanoe is 1,100 acres on Lake Clendening in Harrison County. It is a traditional residential camp that offers adventure camps, teen camps and horse camps during six sessions in June and July. Camp Tippecanoe has been serving area youth for 55 years. Ages 7 to 17 can attend and YMCA members receive a discount. If interested, you can call 1-800-922-0679.

2. Hoover Hoops is once again sponsoring the Hoover Basketball Summer Camp from June 7 to June 10 at . Youth in grades 1-7 can attend to work on fundamental skills of the game. The Hoover coaching staff and varsity/junior varsity players provide a fun and competitive atmosphere complete with daily games and contests. Campers receive a T-shirt, basketball and highlight video of the 2010-11 Hoover basketball season. If interested in attending, e-mail camp director Jim York at jay2nc@northcantonschools.org.

3. Camp Invention  is a week of summer enrichment for children entering grades 1-6. It's at  from June 13-17. The day camp focuses on 21st-century life skills related to problem solving and teamwork. 4. Terry Copacia's All-State Quarterback School is available for youth entering grades 4-6. The one-day camp is July 13 at . Attendees will have indoor and outdoor sessions and receive a T-shirt and manual. Hoover football coach Don Hertler Jr. will serve as assistant director of the camp. 5. School Of Rock is a weeklong rock music day camp at both Highland Heights and Rocky River High Schools. Music Director Tommy Rich, formerly of Donnie Iris and the Cruisers, offers five sessions from June to August. Youth from grade 2 through high school can attend. The camp is a hands-on mix of private lessons and group rehearsals culminating in live performances at week's end.
