Potential Bomb Causes Stir Friday on 4th Street N.E.

Summit County bomb squad responds to investigate suspicious item spotted alongside the street.

An item that appeared to be an explosive device caused quite a commotion Friday morning on 4th Street N.E., according to North Canton Police.

Sgt. Frank Kemp Jr. said in a press release issued Friday afternoon that officers responded to a 9:54 a.m. report of a suspicious object alongside the roadway in the 600 block of 4th St. NE. The North Canton Fire Department also responded to the scene.

Kemp said the object appeared suspicious in nature, so the Summit County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad was called for assistance. The residents of five nearby houses were notified about the discovery and the street was closed to through traffic.

After inspection, Kemp said, bomb squad technicians dismantled the object that turned out to be a soda can and some other materials wrapped in aluminum foil and covered by duct tape.

“There were no signs that the object contained any chemicals or was assembled with the purpose of it being used as an explosive device,” Kemp said. “No further investigation into this incident is planned at this time.”
