Thousands Descending Upon North Canton for July Fourth Race

The annual North Canton YMCA July 4th Race is the longest-running race in Stark County.

For the 36th year in a row, thousands of people from across the regionΒ will line up on North Main Street and participate in the annual North Canton YMCA July Fourth Race.Β 

Over 3,000 runners of all agesΒ are expected to run on the 2-mile or 5-mile course, which will take them down the city's most recognizable streets and landmarks.

The event willΒ welcome all abilities,Β from recreational to competitive walkers toΒ runners and wheelchair athletes, according to race director Debbie Goldthorpe.Β

  • The Shadow Walk has been organized for theΒ physically challenged class, which willΒ gather at Price Park onΒ Tuesday, July 2 at 10:30 a.m.Β and walk or wheel as far as they can.Β 
  • The Kids’ Firecracker DashΒ will be heldΒ at 7:45 a.m.Β July 4th; for children six and under. This short run is free, but children must be registered before the race.Β 
  • TheΒ Ron Russell Perseverance Award will beΒ presented by the Russell family in memory of their father who was an avid runner that overcame adversity to exercise.Β  This award is presented to the race participant who exhibits those qualities.

Race proceeds will benefitΒ the North Canton YMCA Strong Kids Campaign andΒ the North Canton Y Physically Challenged Program, said Goldthorpe.

"This event is truly for everyone ... and it's just pretty inspiration how the whole community can come together and support one another," said North Canton YMCA Communications Director Kathy Yaros.Β 

Registrations will be taken until race time on July 4th.Β 

The 2-mile race begins at 8:10 a.m. and the 5-mile race begins at 8:30 a.m.
