100 Years in 100 Days: Laurel School

100 photographs that define Shaker Heights

Shaker Heights Patch is celebrating the 100 years of Shaker Heights history by creating an online scrapbook. Each day for 100 days, we'll feature a photograph that helps tell the story of Shaker Heights.

Today's photograph features Laurel School, one of three private schools that the Van Sweringen brothers recruited to Shaker Heights. This page from "Roots and Branches: The First Fifty Years of Laurel School" describes the groundbreaking ceremony for the new building that opened in 1928.

The school was established in 1896 by Jennie Prentiss and originally named Miss Prentiss' School. When the school moved to Shaker Heights, a building was constructed on 11 acres named Lyman Circle. That site was named after then-headmistress Sarah E. Lyman.
