100 Years in 100 Days: Gruber's Restaurant
100 photographs that define Shaker Heights

Shaker Heights Patch is celebrating the 100 years of Shaker Heights history by creating an online scrapbook. Each day for 100 days, we'll feature a photograph that helps tell the story of Shaker Heights.
For 60 years, Gruber's Restaurant was the gathering spot for the area's movers and shakers. The restaurant was founded by Max Gruber in 1907, but his sons Roman, pictured here, and Max, Jr. moved it to the Van Aken Shopping Center in 1947.
The restaurant was known for its high society. Guests included Cleveland Browns coach Paul Brown, comedian Bob Hope, actress Jayne Mansfield and artist Salvador Dali. When the brothers retired in 1960, they sold the restaurant. Eventually, it closed in 1967.
