100 Years in 100 Days: St. Dominic Church

Shaker Heights Patch is celebrating the 100 years of Shaker Heights history by creating an online scrapbook. Each day for 100 days, we'll feature a photograph that helps tell the story of Shaker Heights.

The Church of St. Dominic began on Oct. 11, 1945, when the city's first Catholic parish was established. While the parish was getting on its feet, masses were held in the basement of Lomond School. Despite shortages of materials from the end of World War II, a building was constructed, and was dedicated on Aug. 8, 1948. Now, the church now has 1400 families, according to its website.
