Anti-Gerrymandering Event Coming To Shaker Heights

The League of Women Voters of Greater Cleveland are hosting a reception and fundraiser to end the political dividing of cities for voting.

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH — The League of Women Voters of Greater Cleveland want to end gerrymandering, the practice of dividing a district into political party-friendly map for voting purposes. To bolster its cause, the LWVGC is hosting an event, called the Fair Districts Reception and Fundraiser, that will be held at the Hollingsworth Residence, 15700 South Park Boulevard.

Alison Ricker and Mary Kirtz Van Nortwick, the co-presidents of LWVGC, will speak about the importance of ending gerrymandering. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Tickets are $75 for guests, $250 for donors and $500 for sponsors.

Gerrymandering is a hot topic in the Buckeye State. A citizens group formed by the state legislature to explore the impact of gerrymandering recently made its first presentation to the Ohio Congress. During that meeting, the group urged lawmakers to prohibit gerrymandering.

As cleveland.com reported, all 18 people that testified at that meeting urged changes to the current system. Many Ohioans would like to see fairer and more accurate representation at the Statehouse.

The LWVGC has been beating the anti-gerrymandering drum for some time, even releasing a co-written report on the state's problems with the practice. That scathing report can be read here.

To take part in the upcoming reception and fundraiser, attendees can RSVP by emailing LWVGC4FairDistricts@gmail.com. Walk-ins will also be welcome, the LWVGC said in an email.
