Learn How to Use the U.S. Census to Search Your Family Tree

February is Black History Month, but members of the African American Genealogical Society - Cleveland devote some time every month for family research and can help you with your family search.

Cathy Neal of the African American Genealogical Society will discuss the most important tool in the genealogist's kit of resources: the U.S. Census, when she speaks from 6-8:30 pm Wednesday, February 27 at the Shaker Library.

Her presentation will explore the variety of data available within the census and how to understand and search census records online.

Cathy Neal is a 14-year resident of Shaker Heights, who has been a member of the African American Genealogical Society - Cleveland since 2000. She is currently
president of the organization, as well as its website chair. Neal's family research
includes exploring connections from Alabama, Arkansas, and Indiana.

Neal offers some helpful advice for her fellow genealogists:

  • Keep genealogy records manageable;
  • Set aside some specified time to tackle researching;
  • Decide to do something with oral histories;
  • Vow to involve youth with family history in some capacity,

And finally, Neal exhorts all genealogists who store documents, photos, or other information on a PC, disk drive, or portable device: Be sure to back up your files!
