Cleanup At Fernway Elementary Continues
Debris is being sorted on the roof, with some pieces — like slate tiles — potentially being marked as salvageable.

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH — Progress continues at a steady pace as crews try to cleanup and stage Fernway Elementary. All Disaster Service is sorting through metal, wood and slate debris from the roof after a devastating fire rendered the school unusable for the school year.
The district said that some of the recovered debris and other materials may be stored for potential fundraising efforts. More than 750 pieces of debris could be salvaged.
On Monday, two large chutes should be installed at Fernway to facilitate the removal of debris. Crews will also be installing safety rails around the perimeter of the roof, to ensure safety for the work crew.

"The entire process of clearing debris from the roof is expected to take approximately 20 days, depending on weather. After debris is completely clear, work can begin on installing a temporary roof. The temporary roof is currently in the architectural design phase," the district said in an email.
Questions about the cleanup process can be directed at staff during a community meeting on August 1 at Shaker Heights High School. That meeting will be held at 6 p.m., in the school's upper cafeteria, and will feature a panel of leaders from throughout the school district and city.
