Fernway Elementary Fire: 1st Public Meeting Scheduled

The Shaker Heights School District will host a community meeting on Thursday, the district said.

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH — After a devastating fire broke out on the roof of Fernway Elementary last week, the Shaker Heights community rallied together to support both teachers and students of the school. Now the Shaker Heights School District will hold its first public meeting discussing clean-up and post-fire plans for the upcoming school year.

The Community Meeting will be held Thursday, July 19, at Lomond Elementary. The event will be held in the school gym at 6 p.m., the district said.

During the meeting, Board of Education members, district administrators and Fernway Principal Chris Hayward will share available information and take questions from the community. The district is currently working to arrange child care for the event and that information will be shared soon, the administration promised.

The fire broke out on Tuesday morning, last week. No students were inside the building at the time and all staff were safely evacuated.

Several fundraisers have popped up, post-fire, to benefit both teachers and students at Fernway. The Shaker Schools Foundation is helping to coordinate fundraising efforts. To learn more about how to donate, click here.
