Hathaway Brown Students Named to Regeneron Science Talent Search
Madeline Howarth and Zoë Solt are two of four students statewide to make the list.

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH - Two Hathaway Brown students have been named to the prestigious Regeneron Science Talent Search for 2017. Only four students in Ohio made the list and Madeline Howarth and Zoë Solt are two of them.
The competition selects 300 students to be named to the list of nominees. This year there were 1,749 applicants hailing from 527 high schools in 46 states and seven American and international high schools overseas.
Students were selected for the Regeneron list based on their promise as a student, their record of academic achievement, the recommendation of teachers and other scientists, and their projects. Regeneron STS Scholars receive $2,000 and are in the running to become one of 40 Finalists. Finalists will be announced Jan. 24.

Both Howarth and Solt are members of the school's Science Research & Engineering Program.
Howarth worked with the Neurosciences Department at Case Western Reserve University, under the mentorship of Dr. Richard Zigmond and postdoctoral researcher Dr. Jon Niemei. Her research was on identifying cellular responses that occur after peripheral nerve injury in order to aid in recovery and how these responses could be used to aid in central nervous system recovery in the future.

Solt also worked at Case Western. She worked with Dr. Jesse Berezovsky and Robert Badea in the Department of Physics. Her project on "Domain Wall Motion in Concave Ferromagnetic Nanowires" was worked on for two and a half years. She studied various nanowire geometries to identify the best structure to facilitate spin-based electronics starting with computer simulations and progressing to actual fabrication of concave permalloy nanowire.
