Labor Day: What's Open, Closed In Shaker Heights

Police and fire administrative offices will be closed, but 911 services will function regularly, the city said.

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH — Labor Day will be recognized Monday, which means several Shaker municipal buildings will be closed. Trash collection will also be delayed by the holiday.

Shaker Heights City Hall and city offices will be closed Monday. Police and fire administrative offices will also be closed, but emergency services will function regularly, with 24/7 response.

Shaker Heights Public Library will also be closed. The Shaker Heights Schools and related offices will be closed.

Trash collection will be delayed one day throughout the city.

For the historians out there (or the plain curious), the first Labor Day holiday was Tuesday, September 5, 1882. New York's labor unions led the charge to have a holiday. The New York Tribune reported that, "The windows and roofs and even the lamp posts and awning frames were occupied by persons anxious to get a good view of the first parade in New York of workingmen of all trades united in one organization."
