Late Night Prowler Caught by Shaker Heights Police

The man is believed to have rifled through several unlocked cars throughout the city.

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH - Police have arrested a serial prowler that hit several unlocked homes and cars throughout the city last week. Brian Newton, 21, of Cleveland, was taken into custody at a local hotel, police say.

Police are still investigating the incidents Newton may be connected to. However, dozens of unlocked homes and cars were gone through on Jan. 17 and Jan. 18 and Newton was caught on camera lurking around a resident's home.

Here is an image from that video footage:

If Newton is indeed responsible for the late night thefts, his tactics were remarkably similar from one home and car to the next. Commander John Cole of Shaker Heights Police says he waits until late in the evening and then rings your doorbell. If you don't answer, he tries unlocking your car. If you forgot to lock up your vehicle, he'll grab whatever he can.

To make sure you protect your home and cars from future potential invaders, police released a few simple tips. First, lock your cars at night. Second, leave an outdoor light on, particularly if it illuminates your car. That simple light could deter potential thieves. Third, if you're awake late, be a good neighbor and take a look outside your window every once in a while. Especially take a look if you hear something odd. You may catch someone like this car thief prowling around. Call Shaker Heights Police if you spot something unseemly.
