Hack-A-Thing is a five-day immersion in design thinking for product development. Participants will form teams and will take every day products/objects and go through a four-phase process to innovate some aspect of that object: 1) inspiration, 2) ideation, 3) implementation, and 4) iteration. The inspiration phase is about exploring potential problems with the product that are worth addressing. After a problem has be selected and validated, the ideation phase begins. In this phase, participants brainstorm solutions to the problem they identified. Next is the implementation phase in which participants build and then test prototypes of their new innovations of the old object. Finally, participants use the feedback data collected during their tests and iterate on their solution. On the last day of the program participants deliver a presentation to parents, teachers, entrepreneurs and others.

LEAP is a four-week summer experience for high school students interested in entrepreneurship, product development, design and innovation during which participants will collaborate with others to brainstorm product and service ideas and then form teams to take their concepts from ideas into reality. Each team will have a grant of $100 to use for materials and other expenses during the program as well as access to some local service providers to help with product/service development. During the four weeks, there will be weekly field trips and lunches planned for participants to explore cool local startups and entrepreneurial companies as well as perform field work to develop their products or services. Students will have their own workspace at the Shaker | LaunchHouse coworking space, and the entrepreneurs that work there every day will be available for advice and mentoring. There will be daily sessions on different aspects of entrepreneurial work, but don’t worry, we won’t ruin participants’ summer with work! The sessions are largely peer-led and provide for a lot of independent/team free time to complete the fun work of creating startups. The program culminates on the second to last with final pitches to an audience of parents, teachers, entrepreneurs and others, and the next day, the last day of the program, will be a fun party day to celebrate completing the program!
