Look to Shaker Library for its online resources and help in accessing them.

Looking for legal help? Consider your Shaker Library. While librarians can’t give legal advice or interpret the law, they can lead you to helpful online resources like Ohio Legal Help.

Ohio Legal Help seeks to improve justice and fairness for all Ohioans by removing barriers to the law so that people in crisis can understand their legal options, make informed decisions, and connect to local legal and community resources.

The site is divided into sections including Family, Housing, Money and Debt, Health and Public Benefits, Seniors, Veterans and Servicemembers, Crime and Traffic, Disaster Recovery, and Going to Court. Each section has a subset of questions to help guide you to the correct resource, form, or lawyer.

The nonprofit was founded in 2018 to help all Ohioans access the civil justice system. The site offers plain language legal help information, interactive self-help tools, and connections to local legal and community resources that can help people resolve their legal issues. Information is written by a content team and reviewed by expert private and legal aid lawyers to ensure that users have information that is easy to understand, action-oriented and accurate.

Ohio Legal Help is overseen by a seven-member Board of Trustees led by President David Kutik, who retired from Jones Day in 2018. At Jones Day, Kutik was the Cleveland Office Pro Bono and Public Service Coordinator. A former Shaker Heights resident, he is past president of the Cleveland Bar Association, the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland, and the MetroHealth Foundation. He is currently an adjunct professor at Case Western Reserve University Law School where he teaches Energy Law and Litigation Ethics.
