MLK Day 2019: What's Open, Closed In Shaker Heights

Trash collection is delayed, students are off from school, and a lot of museums are free on Monday.

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH — Monday, Jan. 21, is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. All city offices in Shaker Heights will be closed in observation of the holiday.

That means the following institutions will be closed for the day: Shaker Heights City Hall, police and fire administrative offices, but emergency services will still be available. Thornton Park ice arena will be open on Monday, and public skating will run from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Shaker Heights Schools and offices are closed on Monday. However, the district does an annual day of service in observation of the holiday. Residents, students, and families can volunteer to take part in different work projects to help the district and the community.

Trash and recycling pick-up will be delayed by one day for the holiday. Residents who have their refuse collected on Monday, for example, will now have it picked-up on Tuesday. Residents who have their trash gathered on Tuesday, will have it collected on Wednesday, etc.

The Maltz Museum will host a free, family-friendly MLK Day celebration on Monday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be live music, panel discussions, exhibition tours, crafts, and other activities during the day.

There will also be free admission on Monday at the following Cleveland institutions: the Cleveland Botanical Garden, Cleveland History Center, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the Cleveland Orchestra (though tickets are required), Great Lakes Science Center, MOCA, and the Rock'n Roll Hall of Fame. There will also be free ice skating at the Wade Oval rink.
